Tarot card meanings

As we explained in our recent article Purpose of Tarot the majority of the Divinatory Meanings assigned to the Major and Minor arcana tarot cards have been derived from more or less the same source. Little does it provide information of the symbolism at play in the cards. To help in the process of learning how to interpret the tarot cards we will provide with the following basic tools:

  • Original divinatory meaning assigned to the cards by its author A.E. Waite
  • Tarot symbols
  • The meaning ascribed to colors
  • General traits of the Court cards
  • Meaning ascribed to the major arcana by their author A.E. Waite
  • Symbols to be noted on each cards
  • Our own psychic insights into the tarot card meanings

About the Author A.E. Waite

We will first include a brief resume of A.E Waite and the Waite tarot deck.

A. E. Waite
Arthur Edward Waite (2 October 1857 – 19 May 1942), commonly known as A. E. Waite, was an American-born British poet and scholarly mystic. Waite wrote extensively on occult and esoteric matters. He was the co-creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. The original tarot card meanings are included under each card for your reference.

He was the first to attempt a systematic study of the history of western occultism—viewed as a spiritual tradition rather than as aspects of proto-science or as the pathology of religion.

Pamela Colman Smith
The Rider-Waite-Smith tarot was notable for being one of the first tarot decks to illustrate all 78 cards fully, not only the 22 major arcana cards. Golden Dawn member Pamela Colman Smith illustrated the cards for Waite. The deck was first published in 1909.

The Target

I purportedly did not include the hypothesis about the origins of Waite’s data for creating the Rider Waite Tarot deck. When it comes to tarot card meanings, too much information, specially those without empirical data will only lead to fantasy. Learn to connect with the Akasha (the Ether), this is where you will find your answer. Gather only the direction in the form of the most basic information from whatever sources you see fit. Then meditate on the subject. Develop your passion around the Tarot. Meditation and communion is the key to getting your answers.
